Halfway House Project
At the beginning of March 2018 the charity was approached by a local lady who offered the use of a 3 bedroom property. After viewing the property and completing our research on any red tape we may come across the Trustees and committee agreed to accept the offer and take on the house!
It was desperate for some TLC! The house needed completely decorating from top to bottom, there was a bit of plastering and some carpentry required to name just a few things. As well as the manual labour there were also a whole heap of policies and paperwork to put in place…
We encountered a few problems along the way and we’ve also had blood, sweat, tears and tantrums but it was an immense amount of fun too – to know at the end we would have achieved one of our goals made the hard work worthwhile!
A 3 bedroom end terrace property within close distance of our office in Coalville. Includes a spacious kitchen and utility area, 3 good sized bedrooms, large communal living area and huge front and rear garden areas. The gardens and outside space is an ongoing project and will have work completed in Spring 2019 to introduce a decked area complete with arbour and cabin for study, therapies and admin activities.
Let the Fun Begin…
The Finished Result
Temporary shared accommodation for up to 3 veterans – each veteran will have a key to their own room within a very clean, comfortable and homely property. They’ll have shared use of communal areas and everything they require to be comfortable whilst the charity works with them towards permanent accommodation and employment where applicable and a stepping stone towards a better life. The charity has fully furnished the property – brand new furniture and appliances, fitted carpets, vinyl and hardwood flooring throughout. The freezer and cupboards are fully stocked and fresh new bedding is supplied for each veteran who moves in.
How was this possible?
Once, We Were Soldiers were fortunate to have been chosen as a beneficiary of the Leicester City Football Club Foxes Foundation during their 2015/16 Premiership winning season – The charity received funds in excess of £35k – These funds were set aside for funding our first property. We estimate that along with the refurbishment work that has already been carried out that these funds will fund OWWS House for approximately 4 years. Obviously we want to keep it running for much longer than that, which is where your very generous donations and fundraising will come in.
We are extremely proud and excited about this project. This has been one of our main aims since Once, We Were Soldiers was founded in 2013.
Watch this space – If this project proves to be successful OWWS House 2 could be on the horizon!
